QEEG Neurofeedback!

What is QEEG Neurofeedback?

Quantitative Electroencephalography (QEEG) Neurofeedback is a modality (type) of Biofeedback.  With neurofeedback, practitioners are able to identify where your levels of brain activity are and if they are deviated from normal.  Too much or too little activity of certain brain waves can contribute to different mental health symptoms.  By utilizing neurofeedback, you can work on regulating your deviated brain frequencies to help reduce symptoms, enhance your performance, or become more mindful and aware of yourself (Collura, 2014, p. xiii).

What Can Neurofeedback Help With?

Neurofeedback is useful for enhancing one's mental health, peak performance, physical ailments, and overall wellbeing.  The following is a list of what you could use neurofeedback for (Hammond, 2008; Janssen et al., 2017):

  • Developing Mindfulness or Body Awareness Practices
  • Enhancing Meditation Practices
  • Skills Enhancement or Peak Performance
  • Research has shown that neurofeedback assists in decreasing symptoms of

  1. ADHD and Learning Disabilities
  2. Epilepsy, Brain Injuries, and Stroke
  3. Cerebral Palsy
  4. Alcoholism/Drug Abuse
  5. PTSD - Anxiety - Depression
  6. Chronic Fatigue
  7. Fibromyalgia
  8. Tourette's Syndrome
  9. Autism
  10. Sleep Disorders
  11. OCD
  12. Cognitive Deficits
  13. Performance Inhibiting Factors
  14. Tremors
  15. Eating Disorders
  16. Migraines
  17. Behavioral Issues

  • It can also be used for enhancing:

  1. Emotion Regulation
  2. Memory

What happens during a Neurofeedback Session

  • Sensors are placed on the head, and ears to monitor brain wave activity, skin conductance, heart rate variability, and other types of patterns.
  • Clients engage in a visual or auditory activity (games, puzzles, movie, etc.).
  • From the activity selected the client learns strategies for regulating physiology.

  1. When physiology is not within optimal ranges the software detects it and the activity or music responds by pausing, stopping, or losing points.
  2. This response is unwanted as the objective is to keep physiological activity within optimal ranges. When the client makes adjustments and the activity or music resumes, this results in "rewarding" the appropriate adjustments that lead to physiological regulations.

  • The practitioner asks about the client's experience (feelings, emotions, sensations) from the neurofeedback training session, as well as the client's techniques that helped them be successful.
  • The practitioner reviews the data with the client and reports what the scans showed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at info@osagevalleycounseling.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Insurance does not cover Neurofeedback Brain Training.  We accept HSA cards and Care Credit, in addition to traditional methods of payment.  We also have flexible payment plans available to assist with affordability.

Yes.  We encourage you to continue taking any prescribed medications as directed by your doctor, as well as, notify your doctor that you are starting Neurofeedback.  It is not uncommon, that medication doses will need to be adjusted throughout the duration of training sessions, and we are happy to assist with coordinating with your medical team as needed.

Typically, a single Neurofeedback session lasts 20-30 minutes.  For lasting results, an average of 20-40 sessions will take place over 4-6 months.  We suggest 3 sessions per week for 2-3 weeks, then you can reduce to 2 sessions per week for the remaining duration.

Research has shown Neurofeedback to be very effective for most people.  There are circumstances that could arise which could limit the positive changes taking place.  Some of these limitations include ongoing recreational drug use, inability to make healthy changes, continuing to engage in other harmful/maladaptive coping skills.  We encourage the client to continue with psychotherapy while participating in Neurofeedback in order to maintain support for healthy change.

Neurofeedback is appropriate for all ages!  It is non-invasive and effective for many conditions that arise in childhood through adulthood.
