Occupational therapy (OT) is a holistic healthcare service that helps individuals live fulfilling and independent lives. OT focuses on restoring the skills and routines to manage stress, enhance abilities, discover strengths, and improve confidence for everyday living.
Our occupational therapist uses a trauma-informed approach, recognizing the unique needs of individuals who may have experienced trauma. With a fundamental understanding of how trauma can impact the brain, body, and everyday functioning, every OT session is facilitated with sensitivity, respect, and safety.
We strive to engage individuals in meaningful activities that will ultimately enhance quality of life. Such activities may include:
Activities of Daily Living (ADL's) - personal care, grooming, and hygiene
Instrumental ADL's - cooking, cleaning, and money management
Social Participation - fostering connections and improving relationships
Health Management - physical wellness and stress reduction
Rest and Sleep - developing healthy routines for restorative sleep
Education, Work, Play, and Leisure - balancing responsibilities with joy and recreation
Trauma often disrupts life routines, creating barriers to managing daily activities and reducing stress. OT can help by focusing on:
- Rebuilding Daily Routines
- Sensory Regulation
- Emotional and Physical Healing
- Regaining Independence
A therapeutic sensory play room is a specialized space designed to help individuals, especially children, develop and regulate their sensory processing abilities. For our occupational therapist, this room serves as a controlled environment where individuals can engage with various sensory stimuli - touch, sight, sound, movement, and more - to improve sensory integration and emotional regulation.
